Itzik Ben-Gan is a mentor and cofounder of SolidQ. A Microsoft MVP for SQL Server since 1999, Ben-Gan teaches and consults internationally on T-SQL querying, programming, and query tuning. He is the author of Microsoft SQL Server T-SQL Fundamentals and coauthor of Inside Microsoft SQL Server: T-SQL Querying and Inside Microsoft SQL Server:T-SQL Programming. He has written numerous articles for SQL Server Magazine and MSDN, and speaks at industry events such as Microsoft TechEd, DevWeek, PASS, and SQL Server Connections.

Dejan Sarka is a mentor with SolidQ and focuses on development of database and business intelligence applications. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences such as TechEd, SqlDevCon, and PASS. He is the founder of the Slovenian SQL Server and .NET Users Group. As main author or coauthor, Dejan has written nine books about SQL Server. He has also developed three courses for SolidQ: Data Modeling Essentials, Data Quality and Master Data Management, and Data Mining.

Ron Talmage is a mentor with SolidQ. He is a SQL Server MVP, PASS Northwest US Regional Mentor, and current Chapter Leader of the Redmond-based Pacific Northwest SQL Server Users Group. He has been involved with SQL Server since version 4.21a, and has contributed to numerous SQL Server white papers and articles. His current focus is on database administration for relational data warehouses using SQL Server.

At the time of this review, 12/13/12 I have not finished reading or studying this book yet; as a matter of fact, I challenge any person or reviewer saying he or she has finished the book, as frankly speaking would be difficult or impossible to believe. However, I decided to jump ahead and give my honest review from what I've read so far. I have no business relationship with any of the authors whatsoever.

Having said that, I like this book so far. It is way, way better than its previous version. It goes more in-depth and gives a more holistic approach to T-SQL. I'll explain that in a few.

So far, i've read: Chapter 1, which is an intro to what set theory is. Chapter 2, which is about SELECT statements. Chapter 15, which is about Indexes and Chapter 17, which is about optimization. All those cover the basics and more about what you need for your day to day job and to fully understand T-SQL and their proper usage. The Index and Optimization chapters have plenty of illustrations and the concepts are exposed in a clear but concise manner.

Each chapter, as the typical MS cert books, has questions an answers but there are also lot of labs with exercises and T-SQL queries to play with. You only need a SQL2012 instance (any flavor) to practice.

I consider this book a hybrid between Itzik's bestseller, T-SQL fundamentals and previous SQL query book from Microsoft. This new version keeps its simplicity while going more in detail and giving a non proprietary and holistic approach to what T-SQL is or should be.

I've been reading Itzik's books for several years now and he has improved his writing skills a lot. He knows his stuff, no doubt about it, but somehow he has learned how to write to "masses" and being less set based or math oriented.

Another key difference to SQL 2008 or SQL 2005 versions of this book, which is actually a nice one, is that this 2012 MS series of T-SQL books is now more DBA oriented. Not sure if this is because the new authors or the MS cert. requirements itself, but the exercises and lessons are more realistic and performance oriented. The book is no longer about obscure T-SQL syntaxes but how to write code that will run fast and efficient on SQL2012 database engines.

Will this book alone help you pass the test? No, it will not. I think that if you have been working as a full time developer for a year or more, maybe it will. Is this book a good source or test material? No doubt about it. As a matter of fact, this is one of the 1st MS cert. books that actually teaches you proper and clean T-SQL. And giving the awesome writing style, the 15% exam discount and the ANSI oriented code or advices, this is a book that deserves a space In your bookshelf, regardless if you are planning to take the cert. or develops a stronger T-SQL and coding skills.

Laura has a way of breaking this "nutrient-dense" subject matter and making it palatable for even the most ADHD among us (squirrel!). Although bits, bytes, frames and packets are not everyone's cup-o-tea this book goes a long way toward "mainstreaming" network analysis for the "masses". If you are "good with computers" and you want to get a much better understanding of what's going on in your network "under the hood" then this book is a great place to start. Although, there is NO final exam for this 101 course, it WILL prepare you for 201 (hint to Laura).

Windows 8: The Missing Manual 1st Edition, David Pogue

Strange (and perhaps mildly nerdy) as it may sound I've had my eye on the Missing Manual Windows 8 guide since before Christmas (it finally came out in March). I knew I wanted to upgrade my operating system and would want a guide to help me get up to speed quickly. Having read some of David Pogue's other books before so I knew that his sense of humor, his ability to distill instructions and explanations into everyday language, and the general approachability of his work really appealed to me. Because of that I really wanted to use this book to learn Windows 8.

In the end I upgraded earlier than I had originally intended to and bought Windows 8 For Seniors For Dummies to help fill in the gap between when I got Windows 8 and when this book would eventually released. That book was good. It was approachable, it was a start, but it was shallow. So I kept waiting. I knew how to use basic Windows 8 features and I knew where the gaps in my knowledge were.

That's where I came into this book, fully expecting to learn some new, more "advanced" tips on features that may not pertain to the everyday user. I've certainly gotten that, but I've also gotten great little hints and tips that speed up some of the most common ways I interact with my PC computer, from the new Windows 8 interface that Pogue names the "TileWorld" through my desktop and settings.

If you come in with a similar skill set you could probably skip Part One, but then again you may not want to as this section covers some of the most common ways you will interact with your PC and every half second saving tip you pick up could save you hours in the long run. Part One's main focus is on getting you comfortable with the new TileWorld interface. Through it I picked up dozens of little tricks that improve my workflow (apparently my knowledge on even the basics was not as deep as I thought). As with all of the sections I've read it was well written, highly illustrated, conversational in tone, and easy to understand (I'm through about 375 pages of actual reading/trying out, but I've also browsed most all of the sections).

It should also be noted that if you're running a windows-RT device this is your section. While the remainder book does cover more functions applicable to windows-RT users this is the most important section for you because almost everything you do will launch from the TileWorld.

From there Pogue advances through eight total parts:

Part Two: The Windows Desktop; this sections covers interactions on your desktop (dealing with files, programs, the task bar, control panel etc.)
Part Three: Windows Online; this section covers the internet and everything that goes with it including your initial setup, protecting yourself online, and the provided internet browser and email applications.
Part Four: Pictures & Music; this is the multimedia section covering videos, pictures, and music.
Part Five: Hardware & Peripherals; this section is a quick 30 pages on tips and tricks for hooking up and running printers, scanners, and other devices through the sometimes dizzying array of ports on your PC.
Part Six: PC Health; this section covers tips, tricks, and a bit of common sense to help you keep your hard drive from filling up, your computer running fast, and your data safe.
Part Seven: The Windows Network; this section covers the different types of networks and accounts that you can set up, why you might want to set these networks up, and exactly how to do it.
Part Eight: Appendixes; the book has four appendixes which cover windows installation, a quick introduction to the registry (more to ease your fears of it than to tell you how to do everything with it), features that were dropped in Windows 8 (or aren't in their old location), and a handy list of keyboard shortcuts.

While I haven't finished reading each section I have browsed them quite a bit and picked out topics to fill in things that I already knew I didn't understand well. Each topic has been approached with the same clearly defined style and attention to detail as the first 375 pages were. I'm yet to read a topic that didn't teach me something new and I'm also yet to find a topic I couldn't understand.

I give a lot of credit to Pogue for limiting jargon to an absolute minimum, but since I've jumped around a bit I do occasionally see a bit of lingo that I haven't been introduced to, but when that happens I've found that searching the index leads me almost without fail to the first uses of the lingo in question. This makes this a fantastic guide for someone who's not interested in reading a 900+ page manual cover-to-cover. Pogue realizes that nearly no one will use all of the features in Windows 8. He points it out in the book's introduction and acknowledges that because people won't use all of the features, they will skip around in the book (and that's ok). The book is designed for that and the time spent in the index and detailed table of contents to make the book highly searchable make that obvious.

With superbly deep content, a refined teaching style, and an approachability not commonly found in tech manuals approaching 1000 pages, The Missing Manual for Windows 8 is an absolute gem. I cannot recommend it highly enough to those who are planning an upgrade to Windows 8, have just bought a device that came with Windows 8, those that are struggling, and even those that feel like they have a handle on everything. You will learn, you will work faster and smarter, and you will spend more time doing what you want instead of wallowing in frustration.

Snarky? Check. Contrarian? Check. Demanding? Check. That's enough checks for me: most books don't go that far. So, to be blunt: whatever its flaws, this book deserves to be widely read and argued about. Is it perfect? Hell no. Morozov doesn't know when to stop and he is occasionally too full of himself to be enjoyable; at times, this book reads like "Imagine That: Some People Are Wrong on the Internet About the Internet." (Morozov, of course, would say that this last sentence is pure nonsense, for "the Internet" doesn't exist. Okay, Professor!) He's lucky his relatives are no Internet theorists - or he would destroy them as well (that's a Pavlik Morozov joke right there!)

The book somehow manages to stay extremely funny (Morozov has a great eye for the ridiculous and the surreal; his epigrams are hilarious - especially the Franny Armstrong quote comparing soccer and the Internet) and also very serious (too serious at times; there's way too much theory in it - it could easily lose some Dewey and Giddens, not to mention of that other enfant terrible, Bruno Latour).

There's a certain schizophrenic flavor to this text: after all, here's an Internet pundit writing a biting manifesto against Internet punditry. Morozov's critique is both of substance that underpins much Internet thinking - it overlooks deeply political and moral questions and only focuses on efficiency and innovation - and of its style - it presents the Internet as a coherent and revolutionary force, a theoretical move that we have taken for granted for far too long.

There is also a very weird structure to the book: a short first chapter on "solutionism" (which looks as if it were inserted at the last minute), followed by a very long treatise on "Internet centrism," with a chapter dedicated to various mainifestations of both in action. What this book doesn't have is the typical Gladwellian "Let me tell you a story about a counterintuitive thing that happened to this interesting man/company/academic..." that has come to define the genre of Internet punditry (look no further than Clay Shirky for a perfect example of such narration; luckily, Shirky is one figure who gets the worst drubbing in this book).

This is not to say that Morozov shies away from anecdotes and examples - they are plenty - but the bulk of the book is dedicated to what can only be called "ideology critique," with lots of quotations and close readings of Internet thinkers. That someone can pull it off in a trade book is an interesting development all by itself.

Does Morozov repeat himself? Yes. Can the book be shorter? Easily. Is it way too angry? Perhaps. But none of this spoils the final product: it is highly idiosyncratic but it is also the best analysis of all the pitfalls that have stalled our thinking about the "digital."

To sum up: Morozov is like Zizek, minus all the ticks and wrinkled t-shirts. Perhaps, it does take a very cynical Eastern European to point out just how facile, cheap and ridiculous most of our "thinking" is.

CompTIA A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide 8th Edition, Michael Meyers

I may not represent the "typical" target for this book as I purchased it strictly to review CompTIA's Windows troubleshooting protocols; I'm sure my mindset of "let's nuke the entire site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure" when a computer encounters any moderately complex problem is probably not the most conventional (at my job I've found it more practical to keep a backup image on the network). Despite that, I've ended up reading it (mostly) cover to cover; no small feat considering it clocks in at 1150+ pages, and I think I've walked away with more than I expected.

Mike Meyers takes a "let's start at the bottom" approach that I find ideal since I think it's easier to understand a complex subject when I get the building blocks first. I'd say the first quarter to third of the book is focused on the overview of the PC, its basic technology, and the evolution that brought us to the present day. Every chapter begins with a section titled "Historical/Conceptual" in which he will review the basic concepts of how the technology works, then become more concrete. For example, over the course of a few chapters the book covers the basis of computer language (the binary system) and how the processor physically communicates with the rest of the computer. He then applies this to describe the Intel 8088 processor, an old and very influential design, then explains how that design evolved over time to incorporate new innovations and discoveries to bring the reader to the present day's Intel Core series. The middle of the book moves into bringing the fundamentals together, and towards the end circles back to advanced/esoteric hardware implementation and networking.

Some of the material in these sections may seem to have little bearing on the A+ exam, but it's critical to really knowing the basics of computers and how they work; after all, you can't fix something you don't understand. Generally, beyond Historical/Conceptual comes "Practical Application" which will delve into implementing and troubleshooting. I found the tone throughout well balanced, with the right amount of technical detail mixed with analogies where necessary to promote understanding, and enough humor keep a reader awake. There are also a fair amount of Windows screencaps and diagrams when discussing muddy or dense subjects. Every chapter wraps up with a brief quiz to ensure you've picked up the essentials, and closes with a section titled "Beyond A+" to further expand on relevant topics or suggest continued reading or practice.

Later chapters move into what you would expect - Windows internals, hard-drives, LANs, networking, mostly with the same thoroughness as earlier chapters, though at times it does feel like the author is simply rattling off information from a list - I found the section on Windows Group Policies especially tedious, but that's Group Policies for you. Some of the analogies I thought might seem belaboured to a novice; the CPU as a man in a box flipping switches I thought was possibly confusing (like, so simple it's actually kind of obtuse) to someone who doesn't already know a bit about binary and electronics.

If you're considering purchasing this book as a beginner looking to pass the A+ exams, I wouldn't think twice. I think this alone would be enough to pass the exams, provided you spend the time needed to actually practice what you can. The specifics the book gets into about troubleshooting particular problems (and the decent index) would also make this an ok reference to have lying around a shop, though not my first choice.

I know when you're first starting out, it's hard to be patient, especially when you're making your way through a tome as hefty as this, but don't skim and don't think this book is "beneath you" (my mistake initially) and you'll have a good amount of knowledge under your belt by the time you hit the end. A+ is probably your first step, it's important that you get your first step right.

Beyond A+ comes the brunt of computing today - networking. This same author's "Network+" guide book, written with the same attention to detail, would seem to be a natural starting point but it might also be beneficial to go hands on first and try "Computer Networking: Internet Protocols in Action"; it comes with a CD containing packet traces you'll be following with an analyzing program called Wireshark. I'd also suggest a classic, "TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1" if you really want to get how networking works. You'd also do well to check out the catalog of No Starch Press, and bookmark them; you'll be coming back to their heavy stuff in a year or two.

If you learn more quickly when you can see how things are done, this Visual guide is the easiest way to get up and running on Windows 8. Teach Yourself Visually Windows 8 is a great book for the casual PC user or the beginner to intermediate just getting started with the new Operating System. Microsoft's new OS is a complete departure from the way they have done things in the past. And while I don't want to really discuss the operating system in this review, it's important to know that there are enough new features in this operating system and new nomenclature that a book is definitely a handy tool. This book, written so accessibly is a quick read and reference for doing things in the new Windows 8 way.

I recommend this book to almost anyone who really wants a quick read on how to operate a PC or Tablet with Windows 8 on it. I am a huge fan of David Pogue's books "The Missing Manual" series ... but if you need a book now, you want to be walked through it without a ton of explanation ... grab this one.

While suited more for beginners, this book can also help those of us who aren't beginners and who might be tired of hunting and pecking for the tasks that were once very simple and straightforward (such as turning off your PC!) Everything is a little different in Windows 8. A book like this makes the new operating system a lot more accessible to a wider range of people. For the basics, look no further.

Windows 8. I consider myself as above-average in knowledge and using Microsoft products. Windows 8 brings the Microsoft operating system to a new level. After installing the program, I poked around for a few days to see what was new, etc., as well as check out other reviews. My book arrived and is an excellent product. Whether you are an experienced Windows person or have little, if any experience, this book will help you better understand the benefits and functions of the program.

The booklet is very contemporary but most important as the title suggest "Teach Yourself Visually" there are plenty of pictures and diagrams to guide you along your learning curve. By providing so many images, you aren't frustrated while attempting to ramp up. Also, a nice addition is each chapter is color coded so you can skip around based on topics you need to learn or research.

The book covers usage for desktops, laptops, as well as tablets. Regardless of the type of computer you use, if you are a Windows user, you will want to add this book to your library.

If you are a person who uses a highlighter, or if you annotate passages on an e-reader, these attention boxes are fantastic for easily isolating the important details.

The CISSP exam is peppered with many "scenario-based" questions, and Shon has updated her end-of-chapter quizzes to include these types of questions. The quizzes provided on the disc (included with the book) are comprehensive across each domain. The questions offered on the disc will test your true knowledge of the subjects. The Practice Exam book is the perfect companion for the main book, offering detailed explanations of why one answer is "The Best" choice for a particular question.

The folks who compose the questions for the CISSP exam tend to lean towards the "sinister", attempting to trip you up with subtle and sometimes vague wording. Shon writes her questions in a similar style, making you really think about the material to derive the best answer rather than simply memorizing passages from the book. Her questions and the answer choices will get you into the correct mindset to pass the exam. Don't just take her practice exams once and move on - come back and take the same exams again. Even if you start to memorize the answers, Shon's quizzes will help you pick out the important wording of a question so that "sinister and vague" will no longer trip you.

Your studies of the "Common Body of Knowledge" will take you to other sources of information, and while this is encouraged, you will see that none of those sources compare with the directed focus and thought-provoking approach offered in Shon's book. I used 4 different sources for my studies, but Shon's book remained as my "go to" book for clear, concise, and accurate information. Do not be discouraged by the size of the book; when you are taking the test and are presented with a particularly tricky question, you will be thankful for all the detail that is offered in this book. Don't underestimate its value.

This is simply the best book on the market for not only understanding Information Security on a practical and professional level, but also for passing the CISSP exam.
