Windows 7: The Missing Manual, 1st Edition, David Pogue

In early reviews, geeks raved about Windows 7. But if you're an ordinary mortal, learning what this new system is all about will be challenging. Fear not: David Pogue's Windows 7: The Missing Manual comes to the rescue. Like its predecessors, this book illuminates its subject with reader-friendly insight, plenty of wit, and hardnosed objectivity for beginners as well as veteran PC users.

Windows 7 fixes many of Vista's most painful shortcomings. It's speedier, has fewer intrusive and nagging screens, and is more compatible with peripherals. Plus, Windows 7 introduces a slew of new features, including better organization tools, easier WiFi connections and home networking setup, and even touchscreen computing for those lucky enough to own the latest hardware.

With this book, you'll learn how to:
  • Navigate the desktop, including the fast and powerful search function
  • Take advantage of Window's apps and gadgets, and tap into 40 free programs
  • Breeze the Web with Internet Explorer 8, and learn the email, chat, and videoconferencing programs
  • Record TV and radio, display photos, play music, and record any of these to DVD using the Media Center
  • Use your printer, fax, laptop, tablet PC, or smartphone with Windows 7
  • Beef up your system and back up your files
  • Collaborate and share documents and other files by setting up a workgroup network
Reviews

This is a review of Windows 7: The Missing Manual by Daivd Pogue. The book is written in Pogue's clear, easy-to-read, and entertaining style. Through it all, he maintains his sense of humor. It covers most everyone from the most basic beginner to the the advanced super user, although the most sophisticated users won't need much from this book. But even for them, it includes some handy pointers and reference material.

It provides a complete Windows 7 manual, with everything from how to install (Appendix A), to Windows basics (using Windows, file management and search, and setting your desktop) to finding and installing programs, to connecting to and using the Internet, to advanced features like joining a domain and VPN. And it covers everything else in between.

New features like Libraries and Jump Lists are covered nicely. He even describes the Library problems where you can't add a network location to a Library without making that folder available off-line. He correctly points out that this copies that entire folder onto the local hard drive, so you probably don't want to do this.

I especially liked that when features were missing from a particular version of Windows 7, Pogue points that out. He also points out when a feature is available only on certain versions. For example, Aero is not available in Windows 7 Starter Edition, and he points that out when talking about Aero.

The book provides special help for people transitioning from XP and Vista. When he can, Pogue compares things to the way they used to be in XP and/or Vista. For example, he explains how the Start menu and taskbar have changed from both earlier versions.

He also offers handy sidebars with tips and other related information throughout the book. For example, in the section that teaches you about faxing, he has a sidebar on how to create your own fax cover page.

One of my favorite features of the book are the extraordinarily useful keyboard shortcuts. He provides shortcuts for every situation that has one. In addition, he provides a full keyboard reference in Appendix D.

This is truly the Missing Manual for Windows 7. It is not, however, a reference manual. It's designed to be read like a book. And it's a really good book.

Applied Networking Labs, Pearson Custom Business Resources, 1st Edition, Randy J Boyle

I purchased this book as the hands on experience for. Dr Boyle's Networking and Servers course at the University of Utah. The labs are excellent as they teach you basic knowledge of dozens of programs that are commonly used by network administrators and professionals. After doing most of the labs I have substantially added skills to my resume that have greatly increased my visibility to employers. I applied to five network administrator positions and each of them gave me a call, even though I have no work experience. My resume was impressive enough with the skills that these labs added. That is why this book is so valuable; it doesn't teach theory but applicable skills that employers want. I suggest this book to anyone who is interested in learning networking and servers from a basic level. The only downside is that because there are so many programs covered there isn't full in depth discussion on how to use each program. That being said, the book isn't designed to be a user manual for each program but to give general knowledge and skills thereby allowing users to discover and learn on their own with the programs they are interested in.

Dr. Boyle's textbooks have always been a great resource for learning hands on applications of IT Security and Networking skills. Knowledge learned from this book can be put on a resume and teach you how to talk-the-talk during interviews. Unfortunately, many think that just by doing some of the exercises in the book constitute putting those skills on their resume. This book will give you a great introduction, but you have to apply yourself with more outside learning to become proficient enough to get through a job interview!

This book is fantastic. The projects in it are explained thoroughly, and the content is really interesting. I enjoyed doing the projects a lot.

One of my favorite projects involved creating a bootable Linux distro and running the OS from a flash drive as the computer boots.

CEH Certified Ethical Hacker All-in-One Exam Guide, 1st edition, Matt Walker

Matt Walker, CCNA, CCNP, MCSE, CEH, CNDA, CPTS, is the IA Training Instructor Supervisor and a Senior IA Analyst at Dynetics, Inc., in Huntsville, Alabama. An IT education professional for more than 15 years, Matt served as the Director of Network Training, the Curriculum Lead, and Senior Instructor for the local Cisco Networking Academy on Ramstein AB, Germany. After leaving the US Air Force, he served as a Network Engineer for NASA's Secure Network Systems, designing and maintaining secured data, voice, and video networking for the agency.

I passed the CEHv7 certification test through self-study using only this book as a study guide.

Note that I have *a lot* of InfoSec experience--including CISSP and OSCP certifications--but in my opinion, mastery of the material in this book, including the concepts covered in the end-of-chapter questions and ~ 150 sample test questions on the included MasterExam test, *should* allow you to pass the test.

The book is well-written and concise considering the breadth of material the CEHv7 covers.

I recommend this book for anyone pursuing their CEHv7 certification.

This is, hands down, the most well written IT-related book I've come across. While other books have served as an immediate substitute for Ambien, Matt Walker and company have managed to pull off the tremendous feat of making their subject -- dare I say it? -- FUN. The writing is clear, the examples relevant, and there's a touch of humor to enliven the mundane. I've not taken the exam yet, so I can't speak to the alignment with the content, but I feel confident that no other book could have prepared me as well. I highly recommend this book and will keep an eye out for future works by this author.

As someone who has studied for (and passed) more than a dozen IT certifications in the past 4 years, I can say one thing with confidence: this is absolutely the best, most engaging certification study guide that I've ever read. It's neither too dry nor too chatty, and the content is organized very well. The text includes plenty of references to outside material for more in-depth study. If you are studying for the CEHv7 exam, this is an outstanding resource and I recommend it highly.

Edit: Many of the author's examples of how to use the "nc" command are clearly untested and incorrect, although he certainly is clear on the concept of what netcat is capable of. Be sure to test and experiment rather than taking the author's syntactic advice at face value.
